Help a new volunteer get started
Give them a person to meet, a clear role and time to learn. Use this first-month plan alongside your church’s required approvals and training.
Download the onboarding checklist.
Before their first Sunday
- Name a team leader they can contact.
- Explain the role, arrival time and finishing time.
- Ask about availability and serving frequency.
- Complete required approvals and arrange training.
- Send the meeting point and their buddy’s name.
First Sunday: learn with a buddy
Let them watch an experienced volunteer, then try a small task with support. Keep the experienced person responsible for the role during shadowing.
Afterwards, ask what was clear, what needs another demonstration and whether they would like to continue.
Second week: agree the next step
- Check that the role is a good fit.
- Share the instructions or checklist.
- Show how to find the rota and reply to an assignment.
- Explain who to contact if they cannot serve.
Weeks three and four: review
Check the time commitment and ask what was difficult. Agree whether they need another supported session, are ready to serve independently, or would prefer a different role.
Readiness and approval matter more than reaching a particular date.
